Los Alcázares, a spa town, former fishing village on the western side of the Mar Menor, in the autonomous community and province of Murcia, southeast of Spain.
The Mar Menor, this salt lagoon bathes other municipalities: San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar and Cartagena and the largest saltwater lagoon in Europe. Connected to the Mediterranean Sea adjacent to several channels, the Mar Menor has an area of almost 20 km². From 2 to 4 degrees warmer than the Mediterranean, it has a very popular destination for sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing and other water sports. The beaches of Los Alcázares have been awarded with blue flags and prizes in recognition of the cleanliness and maintenance of the Mar Menor beaches.
On October 13, 1983, the town was granted municipal autonomy, this fact is commemorated with the annual celebration of a week with live music, shows, windsurfing competitions and fireworks.
In addition to the annual celebration of municipal autonomy, like many towns and cities in Spain, Los Alcázares also organizes festivals throughout the year, including a large medieval market at Easter, and during the last two weeks of August, ‘Semana de la Huerta’, an international festival of folklore and a popular celebration where fruits and vegetables from the area are enjoyed.
